Auto group starts campaign against teens texting while driving
Texting while driving likely leads to increased accidents and higher auto
insurance rates.
Teen drivers tend to rely more on texting to stay in contact
with their friends, putting them at higher risk. However, an auto dealership group is launching a
campaign to educate young people on the dangers of distracted driving.
The InTEXTicated
information campaign was launched by DCH Auto Group in
conjunction with Students Against Destructive Decisions
(SADD). Members of
the latter group helped design the program’s logo, which will appear in
advertisements.
SADD is sponsored by DCH and is part of its
larger community outreach program. Roy Bavaro, director of corporate marketing
and development for the auto group, noted teens are more inclined to listen to
their peers.
"SADD is a peer run organization, that's why it was important to DCH Auto Group that students design and
decide this public service campaign," Bavaro said.
The Department of Transportation has also recognized that teens
texting while driving is an increasing problem. In October 2009,
officials gathered for a summit to discuss the issue and took input from younger
people.
